"Mirrors"
by Lucy Grealy
Lucy Grealy begins her story with by stating her issue; an inability to look at herself in the mirror without seeing someone who would seem to be a stranger to her. This expands into a series of personal events, several of which detrimental to her sense of self-worth and confidence, her battle with cancer at an extremely young age being the root of these issues. The author is able to convey her emotions extremely well through unique and creative word choice.
I believe the strongest portion of this story is her description of her childhood. She does well to convey the sense of confusion one would have to be a child with an illness so deadly, and to suddenly be transformed from an innocent adolescent to the target of tremendous ridicule.
Though insightful, the story was actually quite depressing. Her life experience showed how cruel some can be, based on appearance. Her ability to move through life under that kind of pressure shows great mental resilience on her part, and though sad overall, bits of inspiration can be gathered from her story.
